What is Lok Sangeet Shala?
Lok Sangeet Shala is a Folk Music Residency Program dedicated to promoting traditional folk music and nurturing young folk artists. It provides a platform for rural youth to learn the nuances of folk music from master artists and preserve the rich heritage of Rajasthan’s traditional music forms.
Why is it being organized?
Many young artists from rural areas lack the resources and proper guidance to pursue their passion for folk music. As modernization and Western music influence continue to rise, traditional folk arts are gradually fading. Lok Sangeet Shala aims to bridge this gap by connecting folk music with educational institutions, creating a sustainable framework for learning through short-term courses, and ensuring that this valuable heritage is passed down to future generations.
How does it work ?
This year, Lok Sangeet Shala will be held from September 24- 29, 2024, at JIET University, Jodhpur. Sixty young artists from various districts of Rajasthan, including Jaisalmer, Barmer, and Jodhpur, will receive intensive training in eight rare folk music forms. They will learn from ten senior artists, including a special master class by Padma Shri Lakha Khan Manganiar. The workshop will cover traditional instruments like Kamaicha, Sarangi, Murli, and Dhol, as well as singing styles of Manganiars, Meghwals, and Langas. The event will culminate on September 29 with a grand performance by the young artists and their mentors.
